After years of working experience in A&E, at the ambulance service and Doctors Without Borders, Renate Bongaards decided to change course. She became proposition lead Emergency Care at Topicus. A leap of faith, but Renate knows how to use her industry knowledge to take healthcare innovation a step forward. “What makes my background in healthcare so valuable is that I can bring the perspective of the acute care sector. From that perspective, I can look at how we can improve our support from Topicus.”
Renate: “I am still from the generation of Medical Center West. That's where the seed was planted for my love of the healthcare sector. I have worked in all kinds of parts of healthcare, from nursing and care homes to mental health, but turned out to have a particular fondness for acute care. I got a taste of several departments, but my favorite was working in the emergency room - that's where the action was. Eventually, I enjoyed working in the emergency room in Amsterdam for several years. From there I then switched to the ambulance service.”
“It's not in my nature to do the same thing for a long time. My craving for challenge and variety led me to work 50/50 in the primary care process while also holding staff and policy advisory positions. As a result, I became increasingly involved in healthcare innovation, and then you quickly have to deal with IT. For example, I supervised the transition from paper records to EHRs and all kinds of innovations that followed.

“From my last job, we were Topicus customers, so we knew each other. I often asked critical questions and had ideas about what could be better. That got us talking to each other and that's how the opportunity unfolded for me to start at Topicus as Proposition Lead Emergency Care. A great opportunity to actually apply my improvement ideas, but also enormously exciting at the same time. I decided to take the plunge.
Meanwhile, I have been employed for a year and a half. When I look back on my work history in healthcare, I think mainly of the small, beautiful moments: seeing the person in the patient, the direct contact with the patient and the realization that you can really mean something to others. Many people naturally ask about all the exciting and big moments I experienced, but for me it was mainly in the smaller moments.
I try to apply those beautiful moments in my current job by connecting with colleagues and clients alike. Really seeing people, understanding them, and paying attention to each other. It helps that clients know where I am from, some know me well. In my current role, I have a sincere intention to set up the best service for these people who work so hard every day for all of us. What makes my background in healthcare so valuable is that I can bring the perspective of the acute care industry and look at how we can improve our support from Topicus from that perspective.”

From that perspective, we are looking at the further development of our platform. The focus is on further development, bringing care providers closer together and making our products smarter.
