Better and Topicus announce strategic partnership

Collaboration in healthcare is crucial, and sharing patient information is at the heart of that collaboration. The use and exchange of data and information are significantly accelerated and improved through the adoption of open standards for data recording. openEHR is a comprehensive standard for medical information that provides a solid foundation for storing and exchanging data.

Better, provider of an openEHR-based digital health data platform, and Topicus Healthcare, specialist in process-supporting software for healthcare, have entered into a strategic partnership to accelerate the development and deployment of openEHR-based health information systems in the Netherlands and beyond.

Topicus will use the Better Platform to explore new approaches to building modular, interoperable solutions that support data sharing across healthcare organisations. Together, the companies aim to empower healthcare providers with more flexible, standards-based digital tools that enable safer, better-coordinated, and more patient-centred care.

Building open and future-ready health systems

Better will provide Topicus with access to its open data platform and low-code development tools, enabling Topicus to design, test, and implement new applications based on openEHR. With extensive experience in developing innovative solutions for hospitals, GPs, and public health providers, Topicus will leverage the Better Platform to explore new models of digital healthcare delivery. The collaboration aligns with both organisations’ commitment to interoperability, data reuse, and long-term sustainability of health IT infrastructures.

The two companies will jointly work on pilot projects and use cases, laying the foundation for a new generation of connected health systems in the region.

“We are very pleased to welcome Topicus to our network of partners,” said Petar Abadžić, International Markets Director at Better. “Topicus is an established and respected leader in the Dutch healthcare IT sector, and their decision to explore openEHR-based development is an important milestone for the region. By working together, we will bring forward solutions that make healthcare data more accessible, interoperable, and useful for both clinicians and patients.”

“Our partnership with Better represents an exciting step forward in our mission to enable connected and data-driven healthcare,” said Leon van der Zande, lead architect from Topicus. “We believe that openEHR provides a strong foundation for building future-ready systems that are truly interoperable. By combining our deep knowledge of the Dutch healthcare ecosystem with Better’s open data technology, we can accelerate innovation and deliver real value to care providers and the people they serve.”

Benefits for healthcare providers and patients

The partnership between Better and Topicus will enable healthcare organisations to benefit from a unified, standards-based data layer that supports interoperability across care settings, ensuring that patient data flows securely and seamlessly between hospitals, primary care, and community providers. It will allow health systems to evolve and expand without being tied to rigid legacy architectures, reducing vendor lock-in and aligning with European interoperability frameworks. This collaboration aims to make healthcare information more accessible, empowering clinicians to deliver safer and more efficient care, and enabling patients to be more actively involved in their health journeys.
